Äänen Lumo presents an evening of… guitars!

CLARA DE ASÍS, a guitarist, composer and performer originally from Spain and now based in France, has developed a non-conventional and personal instrumental approach; with longstanding interest in minimalist frameworks, spacial auscultation and temporal suspension. She uses different combinations of materials and sound sources, with a main focus on guitar. The concert in Akusmata is a solo performance for acoustic guitar, microphones and objects.

SÄHKÖKITARAKVARTETTI is a fresh Helsinki-based electric guitar group concentrating on contemporary/experimental compositions. The group aims to bridge the imaginary gaps between sound art, experimental music, contemporary composition and improvisation. In Akusmata the quartet will premiere works by e.g. Clara de Asís and Russian composer-musician Ilia Belorukov.

Musicians: Juhani Grönroos, Lauri Hyvärinen, Jukka Kääriäinen, Sigurdur Rögnvaldsson.

Lauri Luhta: Architecture of Right

 Lauri Luhta
Architecture of Right

16 November – 3 December 2017
Open Thursday – Sunday  2-6 pm
Opening: Wed 15 November 6-8 pm

Opening performance

At the opening of Lauri Luhta’s sound art exhibition Architecture of Right at Akusmata, Wednesday 15 November, a soundtrack to Jenni Luhta’s video Häivähdys parempaa maailmaa (“Glimpse of a Better World“) will be produced live. A work of video and environmental art carried by text, Häivähdys parempaa maailmaa was filmed in the same surroundings of Pihlajamäki, Helsinki, that the field recordings for Lauri’s Architecture of Right sound installation took place during this year. Jenni’s video was originally finished for Pihlajamäki’s Night of the Arts in August, 2009. The work was premiered at the local bar Ralli and later shown at Orion cinema in Spring, 2010 – without a soundtrack, which it has lacked for eight years.

Video is screened at 7:00 pm. Sound is mixed by Lauri.

Refreshments are provided by Jenni. Welcome!

Architecture of Right

Lauri Luhta’s sound art installation Architecture of Right is based on field recordings made in Pihlajamäki, Helsinki, during different seasons of the year 2017. Out of the material thus assembled, Luhta has crafted a circular, spatial-temporal composition, which one can go to.
A suburb erected in the the 1960s, Pihlajamäki is visually recognisable by its landforms, its buildings and the plan of its architecture. Pihlajamäki is carved in terrain risen from the primordial sea as a home for the people and as an image of the geometric and the organic, the rational and the expressive. In Architecture of Right, one observes what kind of aural living environment the walls and hollows of the area create and what the firmament of the sky above it sounds like.
In Architecture of Right, one is moving on the Right-Hand Path, the clear and plain road of right and truth that is narrow yet open to everyone. In the work, one steps in and stands still in the soundscape that always lies in the background of the existence of an inhabitant of Pihlajamäki, amidst the world, at the world’s centre. A world of sound with its different elements and little details, with its sounds of nature, men and machines, its children, birds and airplanes, is always waiting for the one who stops and settles down on land. When that depth is reached, its basis is mined for nourishment and understanding.
Architecture of Right is a work of the author for the neighbourhood that has become his new home region, a homage to its planners, builders and dwellers. The exhibition is also dedicated to the Republic of Finland, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary and whose bright noontime thinking Pihlajamäki represents.

Lauri Luhta (b. 1980, Vaasa) is a Helsinki-based sound, video, media and performance artist, organiser of art festivals and cultural events, document archivist, theologian, custodian of being.

“Ore.e Refineries: Sound of Work” -working group (blacksmith Jesse Sipola & artist Eero Yli-Vakkuri) and sound designer Kristian Ekholm present a sonic metalwork demonstration at Akusmata Sound Art gallery. The group explores soundscapes which blacksmiths produce through their labor. The group uses pneumatic tools and steel as their instruments. The gig opens a two week long exhibition, which presents artworks inspired by the “Sound of Work: Blacksmith ed. 1” archaeoacoustic sound library. The library consists of tool and machine themed samples recorded at Sipola’s forge close to Turku, Finland.

Ore.e Refineries: Sound of Work -työryhmä (seppä Jesse Sipola & taiteilija Eero Yli-Vakkuri) sekä äänisuunnittelija Kristian Ekholm tarjoilevat Akusmata äänitaidegalleriassa kova-äänisen työnäytteen. Työn ääniä -näyttelyn avaava esitys hyödyntää sepäntyössä käytettäviä työkaluja sekä teräksen ja metallin sointia. Keikan aikana kuullaan kuinka paineilmalaitteet, kaasupillit ja rauta taipuvat soittimiksi. Tapahtuma juhlistaa yli 140 työkalun ja metallin käsittelyn kartoittavan ääniarkiston “Sound of Work: Blacksmith” julkaisua. Äänitteitä on kuultavissa myös näyttelyssä.

Työn ääniä -näyttely pohjautuu seppä Jesse Sipolan pajalla tallennettuihin työkalu- ja metallintyöstöäänitteisiin. Pajalla kerättiin kaikkiaan 142 eri ääninäytettä, joista valtaosa on erilaisten paineilmatyökalujen tuottamia. Kokoelmaan sisältyy muiden muassa parikymmentä eri Atlas Copco koneen synnyttämää ääntä. Äänitteet on koottu laajamittaiseksi “Sound of Work: Blacksmith ed. 1” kokoelmaksi, joka on julkaistu verkossa vapaan käytön sallivalla lisenssillä. Julkaisu on suunnattu äänisuunnittelijoiden ja muusikoiden käyttöön. Sen avulla tietokonetyöläiset voivat liittyä käsityöläisten äänimaisemaan.

Näyttelyssä on kuultavissa kokoelman inspiroimia teoksia ja muuta työn äänellisyyttä pohtivaa taidetta. Näyttelyn on koonnut Ore.e Refineries: Sound of Work -työryhmä (seppä Jesse Sipola & taiteilija Eero Yli-Vakkuri) sekä äänisuunnittelija Kristian Ekholm. Käsityöläiskulttuurin edistämisorganisaatio Ore.e Refineries muistetaan NO-CHAIR-DESIGN kampanjasta, jonka haastoi muotoilijoita jättämään tuolit suunnittelematta. Viime vuodet työryhmä on toiminut Hevoslinja projektin parissa, pyrkien mahdollistamaan taajama-alueella toteutuvaa hevosliikennöintiä.

Taiteilijat Balance, Hakala ja Mild työskentelevät purkamalla ja kokoamalla grafiikan ja mediataiteen elementtejä.

Yggdrasil, elämänpuu, luo sähkövirrasta kuultavan ja silmillä havainnoitavan kuvion äänen värähtelystä. Rikkinäinen tarina haastaa katsojan primääriaisteista kuulon ja näön seuraamaan triptyykkinä esitettyä kertomusta.

WYSIWYG on paljaaksi riisuttua sähkövirtaa. What you see is what you get

Artists Balance, Hakala and Mild are working together by tearing apart and reassembling elements from graphics and media art.

Yggdrasil, the Tree of life, creates a visual pattern from the vibration of sound, which is made by electric current.  A story on the fritz challenges ones primary instincts, to hear and to see a narrative that is presented as a triptych.

WYSIWYG is stripped down electricity. What you see is what you get.

Resting Place is an installation of abandoned consumer electronics and appliances salvaged from trash and flea markets. It gives them a voice that is something completely different from their intended purpose. They hiss, clatter and radiate.

Material for the installation comes from “byproducts” that the devices produce while functioning. Physical movement of desk fans, static noise from an obsolete television and electromagnetic vibration created by power supplies are all blended and smudged through different effects. All the parts combined they form a physical object, that plays it’s own music.

When a device becomes useless through breaking down or releasing of a new model they get usually sent out of sight, to another dimension. This dimension resides often in West-Africa, India or China. Consumer doesn’t accept that there are things that do not serve any purpose in the cycle of functioning. In the exhibition this waste stands not as a form of art made from recycled materials, but as it is – as matter.

Elias Pöyliö performs experimental music under pseudonym Fell Hand. His soundscape bears signs from noise, industrial and techno. His installation is his first public exhibition in a gallery surrounding.

Dial” is an audio work dealing with emotions caused by either technical or human caused malfunction of voice connection between two people. By audio symbols and minimalist narration the story is controlled to an abstract situation where interpretation of the situation is left to the experiencer.

The set-up of the soundscape is at the same time possible and impossible, fictional and documentary, calm, anxious, and ominous but unreal. Paradoxes aim to arouse ambivalent feelings in the listener and create a realistic but unnatural sound field without a clear explanation of what is happening.

Searching for a rational explanation for the soundscape the listener is given a possibility to deal with emotions such as confusion, uncertainty, tension, frustration, confusion and empathy. In essence, the work is all about the basic human need to be heard and understood, to feel connected to the wider world, as well as to another person.

Hannu Ikola is a Helsinki-based electronic music artist, who combines experimental electronic music, industrial, techno and ambient in his music. Akusmata exhibition is his first audio exhibition in public gallery purely focused on the sound.

Ääniteostaan varten George Cloke on tallentanut vuoden ajan BBC:n radioaseman uutisia, ja noukkinut teokseensa kaikki uutisselostajien lausumat joissa esiintyy sana ‘killed’, tapettu. Teos saa ensiesityksensä Akusmatassa.

George Cloke on Year In Review

– Since December 2015, I have listened everyday to the news bulletin of a popular British radio station, chronicling and recording every time of the word ‘killed’ is uttered by one of its presenters. I have then sampled each word within a tiny extract of its original context, and placed them into a continuous loop. The result is a stark and affecting commentary on our gradual desensitization to the atrocities which we hear and read about everyday.

‘Year In Review’ encourages the listener to contemplate the word ‘killed’ itself (does it retain the power to shock and sadden without full context? Is it more traumatic when isolated and repeated?), the media (what does the word signify for the anchor saying it?), and for the audience (how do we as listeners react to the word, if at all?).

Throughout the year, we have been faced with unceasing levels of trauma, adversity and sorrow. ‘Year In Review’ looks to provide the listener with a challenging but ultimately cathartic aural experience, in which we can not only acknowledge our current state of ‘hypernormalization’, but actively seek to change it as a result.

George Cloke is a musician and sound artist from Kent, UK. Adept of sound mapping / sound ecology he is also a member of the minimal post rockin’ ambient duo Team Morale. In 2015 George was invited to take part in an art residency in Hrísey, Northern Iceland. A sound map of his time there was featured on Drowned In Sound and Fluid Radio. ‘Hrísey’ was exhibited as sound installation at CCA Glasgow and Sound Thought Festival. The work represents the most challenging and experimental facet of George Cloke’s soundscapes. George’s works has been featured on BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, and NTS, and appeared on blogs including Line of Best Fit and DIY.

Kolmiotaajuus

Kolmiotaajuus

6.2.-17.2.2017
Mon-Fri 14.00-18:00 PM

Exhibition opening and Live Performance on Friday, 3.2.2017, 18:00 PM.

Kolmiotaajuus – “Triangle Frequency” – is a sound installation that consists of three looping “endless tapes” of varying lengths and a projected video loop. The installation examines both how improvised music recorded by three musicians in separate sessions combines to create a greater whole when played together as well as how endlessly looping music recorded onto a cassette tape can work as a living, changing music experience due to its physical format.

The sonic element of the installation comprises one five-minute tape, one ten-minute tape and one twelve-minute tape, which means the sound will loop every 60 minutes. However, small irregularities in tape lengths, the length of the video loop and the degradation of the tapes due to continued play ensure that even though the components of the installation have been recorded in advance, it will never repeat itself in the exact same way and will in fact change slightly during the exhibition period. The tapes will also be played from different starting points on every day of the exhibition.

Kolmiotaajuus, founded in 2014, is a three-member band that plays improvised electronic ambient music. The three members Jukka Eerikäinen, Valtteri Hyvärinen and Arttu Ronkainen come from different musical backgrounds and have various bands, projects and interests. Kolmiotaajuus has performed live actively since 2015 in and outside Finland and released its first LP, compiled from live recordings from the year 2015, in early 2016.
