City Escapes:

Vesa Kartesalo (FIN), synths, keys
Evelin Kask (EST), visuals, video
Annika Laaksonen (FIN), voice, electronics
Tuomo Noppari (FIN), sounds, electronics

City Escapes is a cross-disciplinary art work between three musicians and one visual artist. In this site-specific work, sound and visuals cross and merge a constant dialogue. City Escapes consists of half-improvised electronic sounds and poetry singing, physical installation and video work. It focuses on the fragmentation of our time: we exist in one physical place, yet we exceed it, functioning simultaneously in-between parallel mental spaces, spaces of otherness.

*   *   *

Vesa Kartesalo is an electronic music producer. He has deepened his understanding of electronic sound by designing and assembling parts of his modular system himself. Currently his work relies heavily on unconventional melodies, harmonies and rhythms, remaining rooted in the mainstream electonic and pop music.

Evelin Kask is a visual artist working mainly with the concepts of time and entropy, and the cyclic process of creation, destruction and recreation. She has exhibited in Finland and abroad, and works often across the field in collaboration with other artists.

Annika Laaksonen has a long history of singing different genres of music. Last few years she has been concentrating on electronic material including producing it on her own under the name of Blankau. On this night, she will use her ethereal yet soulful voice through a looping station.

Tuomo Noppari is a multi-instrumentalist with a taste for wide range of music. He’s known from the bands such as ‘N Stuff, Klasu and Koria Kitten Riot. He has also composed music for theater plays.

Stefan Christensen
(USA)

Since the demise of long-running New Haven punk outfit Estrogen Highs, the bands’ leader, Stefan Christensen, has stayed busy with an outpouring of solo recording. Incorporating influences ranging from Xpressway/Precious Metal Records artists like The Dead C, Gate, Alastair Galbraith, and Peter Jefferies, the UK DIY scene, Ohio weirdo and outsider punks, and the Twisted Village contingent, and always tinging it with his own personal brand of song writing and noise making, to create sounds that drive forward, despite their keen observance of the past. With songs ranging from 40 second damaged acoustics to 20 minute freakout noise jams, the exact sound is hard to peg down.
The live shows see Stefan solo or joined by ‘Friends,’ a revolving door of New Haven noise makers, who create often lengthy free form rock music. Stefan’s first solo cassette was recently reissued by Minneapolis’ Night People Records, and two upcoming releases on Buffalo’s the Loki Label loom just around the corner, with even more coming down the line on the newly minted C/Site Recordings.

Andrea Camporotondo (ITA)
Born Roma 15/08/71. Lived in Australia Melbourne from 1994 to 2006, living in Helsinki Finland since June 2006. Member of Australian Psy/ Experimental/ Prog/ Ambient band Lung UPC, ex-member of Italian Grunge/Metal bands DTM and Mud, as lead guitarist. Since technology has entered in to my life I have recorded few solo albums. I started last year when I reluctantly decided to plug my beautiful guitar into the computer. So far I’ve made a few albums, Voices, The Red Prince, Running Out Of It, Rusty The Rat, The Enigmatik, Attention to Coordination, The Search, Northern Chills, The Holiday, The Giant, Singles, The Notepad.

Juha-Matti Rautiainen / Mr. Randomizer
I’ve been working on some new material for the next album and about three tracks have been skecthed at the moment. This time I’ve got a coherent concept in my head so the compositions will be going through stricter selection. The theme that is swirling around in my head is quite dark, so the outcome will be more or less darker than my previous album. I’m trying to compose the rest of the material during the summer and I hope that the album would see the light not later than next year.
There are also three outtakes from “The Endless Now…” and they’re waiting to be mixed. They’re very different in mood from the ones that I’ve worked recently, so they won’t be fitting on the forthcoming album. They are most likely the most optimistic and accessible tracks that I’ve recorded. I’m going to publish them at my bandcamp as soon as I get them mixed.
…And finally an advertisement: If you would like to have a physical copy of “The Endless Now…”, act quickly! There are only 35 copies left… It can be ordered from bandcamp.

“Ore.e Refineries: Sound of Work” -working group (blacksmith Jesse Sipola & artist Eero Yli-Vakkuri) and sound designer Kristian Ekholm present a sonic metalwork demonstration at Akusmata Sound Art gallery. The group explores soundscapes which blacksmiths produce through their labor. The group uses pneumatic tools and steel as their instruments. The gig opens a two week long exhibition, which presents artworks inspired by the “Sound of Work: Blacksmith ed. 1” archaeoacoustic sound library. The library consists of tool and machine themed samples recorded at Sipola’s forge close to Turku, Finland.

Ore.e Refineries: Sound of Work -työryhmä (seppä Jesse Sipola & taiteilija Eero Yli-Vakkuri) sekä äänisuunnittelija Kristian Ekholm tarjoilevat Akusmata äänitaidegalleriassa kova-äänisen työnäytteen. Työn ääniä -näyttelyn avaava esitys hyödyntää sepäntyössä käytettäviä työkaluja sekä teräksen ja metallin sointia. Keikan aikana kuullaan kuinka paineilmalaitteet, kaasupillit ja rauta taipuvat soittimiksi. Tapahtuma juhlistaa yli 140 työkalun ja metallin käsittelyn kartoittavan ääniarkiston “Sound of Work: Blacksmith” julkaisua. Äänitteitä on kuultavissa myös näyttelyssä.

*   *   *

Työn ääniä -näyttely pohjautuu seppä Jesse Sipolan pajalla tallennettuihin työkalu- ja metallintyöstöäänitteisiin. Pajalla kerättiin kaikkiaan 142 eri ääninäytettä, joista valtaosa on erilaisten paineilmatyökalujen tuottamia. Kokoelmaan sisältyy muiden muassa parikymmentä eri Atlas Copco koneen synnyttämää ääntä. Äänitteet on koottu laajamittaiseksi “Sound of Work: Blacksmith ed. 1” kokoelmaksi, joka on julkaistu verkossa vapaan käytön sallivalla lisenssillä. Julkaisu on suunnattu äänisuunnittelijoiden ja muusikoiden käyttöön. Sen avulla tietokonetyöläiset voivat liittyä käsityöläisten äänimaisemaan.

Näyttelyssä on kuultavissa kokoelman inspiroimia teoksia ja muuta työn äänellisyyttä pohtivaa taidetta. Näyttelyn on koonnut Ore.e Refineries: Sound of Work -työryhmä (seppä Jesse Sipola & taiteilija Eero Yli-Vakkuri) sekä äänisuunnittelija Kristian Ekholm. Käsityöläiskulttuurin edistämisorganisaatio Ore.e Refineries muistetaan NO-CHAIR-DESIGN kampanjasta, jonka haastoi muotoilijoita jättämään tuolit suunnittelematta. Viime vuodet työryhmä on toiminut Hevoslinja projektin parissa, pyrkien mahdollistamaan taajama-alueella toteutuvaa hevosliikennöintiä.

Video: (16:9, HD , 2014-2017 ) directed by Nina Oförsagd

Music: collective live improvisation w/ performative elements

In City Mirage, different cities from Europe and Far East are brought together through several video sequences.

In City Mirage, it is question about trying to understand how we comprehend our surrounding by observing movement of the urban habitants and studying historical layers of the spaces.

Sounds shape our understanding of a place and open us different dimensions of time and space – leading and shaping our interpretation.

The video is a visual score for live music improvisation. It gives impulses for the performers and form for the interpretation. The order and number of the video sequences is different in every performance. Thus every performance of the City Mirage will be different. City Mirage is an ongoing project and after Akusmata the project will head to Estonia, Sweden and Taiwan.

rihmasto

Jarkko Lahti and Jukka Andersson are the ambient project Rihmasto. Slow vibrations of Rihmasto will keep you at the frontiers of dreaming, where sense of time and space is warped. Acoustically living spaces and nebulus places take the listener to an experience of indefinite adventure, with the permission to get lost. When perspective and detection are blurred, small things feel larger, and vice versa. Ambience recordings are blended to synthetic and organic sounds in these loosely scripted stories. During the performance, little by little, the sound begins to take control and route the flow. Energy and forces of nature are strongly present and experience is very personal. The sound started at 1996. Live performances since the year 2000.

Jukka Hautamäki

Media artist Jukka Hautamäki (b. 1971) lives and works in Helsinki, Finland. Hautamäkis sound performances are microscopic studies into electronic sound. Live setup consists of DIY sound devices, which he manipulates in real time by changing components and reconnecting circuits. Music style could be described as abstract ambient noise with a twist. Pekka Tolonen

Pekka Tolonen is one of the pioneers of Finnish electronic music. He is known from 80’s Argon/Organ synth-bands, and from compilation of Aids virus DNA code into music, stored in a time-capsule buried into the foundation stone of Science Centre Heureka.

Other 80’s works by Tolonen include computer-poetry Runerberg/Satunai with Arto Kytöhonka, Matrix Mind MUU group’s videoart with Otso Pakarinen, and Kalle Home-Psychiatrist program, which Jyrki Kasvi (now Finnish politician) converted to Commodore 64 for MikroBitti Magazine, and Erotic Virtual Personality Lulu debuted in Heureka’s Artificial Intelligence and Hyvinkää Erotic Art exhibions.

“It was continuum of my 70’s period, when I was building musical electro-shock machines, reverbs, flangers, synthesizers, run pirate radio stations and played progressive and heavy metal. Programming came up naturally when I got Apple computer in -81”, Tolonen remembers.

In Akusmata Tolonen plays analog plasma music, which has been made from realtime satellite data, measuring coronal mass ejections of the sun – and talks about modular synths and methods, which are suitable for artists interested in functional data-art genres.
